Questions to Ask Before Renovating: Our Workshop at the Spring of Architecture

On May 3rd, as part of the Spring of Architecture organized by the Sutton School of Art, William Murray hosted a workshop on what it really means to renovate ecologically, and the pitfalls to avoid when renovating.
The main pitfall isn't choosing the wrong siding — it's poor moisture management. A more airtight building envelope that can no longer dry out is a recipe for mould, material deterioration, and costly do-overs a few years down the line. Adding insulation without understanding how moisture moves through walls can be an expensive mistake.

The discussion that followed was lively, with questions covering wall assemblies,
moisture management strategies, triple-pane windows, heat recovery air exchangers, and the embodied carbon in the materials you choose. That's exactly the kind of conversation we aim to foster through Rocket Science — making building science accessible so the right decisions are made before work begins.
The Spring of Architecture is a great platform for this kind of exchange, thank you to the Sutton School of Art and to all the participants!
